Ap Chau: It is the smallest island in Hong Kong with only 0.04 km2. It is hard to imagine there were 1000 residents at its peak. Today there are only 3 recorded residents on the island. There was a school which was converted into a story room of Ap Chau, featuring the settlement of history and old utensils of the old days. As the island is so small we can just walk around the island, the coastline is filled with red hue ochre breccia which is rare in Hong Kong. The sea arch (duck eye) at the north end of the island is the main attraction. After the visit we will get on ferry and depart for Kat O.
Kat O (Crooked Island): It is the largest island in North District of Hong Kong with 2.35km2 in an inverted Z shape. Now it is called “Kat O” in English which means auspicious bay in Chinese. After lunch we get on boat again and head to Lei Chi Wo.
Lei Chi Wo: Some places always beckon you to return. Visitors to Lai Chi Wo will agree that it is one such place. Lai Chi Wo is one of the oldest, biggest and best-preserved rural settlements in the northeast New Territories of Hong Kong. Built over 300 years ago according to traditional geomancy rules, the village is laid out with three longitudinal and nine horizontal rows of houses, with more than 200 houses in all. The charming rural homes slope progressively up the hill, and the whole village is protected by rustic walls. Siu Ying Story Room: It is a gallery now which was formerly the extended Siu Ying School building. Established in the 1920’s, the school provided elementary education to children from the seven villages for several decades. It is an important piece of collective memory. The showcase mainly comprises villagers’ oral history narratives and generously donated cultural relics. It is a wonderful reproduction of rural hamlets in bygone days.
