As an endangered species, Romer's tree frog is protected under the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance of Hong Kong. Ngong Ping is one out of 70 Sites of Special Scientific Interests (SSSI) in Hong Kong, to protect the unique yet fragile microhabitats of the ecosystem. The SSSI in Ngong Ping aims to protect the largest population inhabited of endemic and threaten Romer’s Tree Frog. Romer’s Tree Frog originally can also be found in outlying Island. Due to the construction of the new airport at Chek Lap Kok islands, captive breeding and relocation were done in various parts of New Territories and Hong Kong Island as well.
